Spalting occurs when fungus attacks a dying tree. If left alone, the fungus will ultimately rot the wood. However, when caught in time, the wood can be dried, killing the fungus, and can be used without any loss of the integrity of the wood. In Wisconsin, spalted birch typically has dark brown or black lines, but other woods and other locations can see red, blue, or green lines of spalting. Spalted wood is not common because most trees are taken down after the fungus has done too much damage to allow the wood to be useful. Thus, spalted wood is prized by woodworkers.
